Pinned By Falling Metal Pallets, Man Killed At East Penn Manufacturing: Coroner

A Schuylkill County man was killed in a workplace accident after being pinned by falling metal pallets at East Penn Manufacturing in Berks County.

Stephen Rapp, 48, of South Manheim Township, was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, in the emergency department at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office said on Wednesday, March 12.

The fatal incident happened at 102 Deka Road in Lyon Station around 7:49 p.m. when the metal pallets fell on Rapp, causing mechanical asphyxia, officials said. His death has been ruled an accident.

East Penn Manufacturing confirmed the incident occurred at its industrial battery facility and said it is working closely with OSHA and local authorities on a full investigation. The company expressed its "deepest condolences and sympathies" to Rapp’s family, friends, and coworkers, adding that it is providing grief support and counseling services to employees.

The Fleetwood Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating.
